Parker Building Supplies East V West Charity Football Match 2018

Posted 3rd September 2018

A beautiful day of sunshine and blue skies welcomed Parker Building Supplies to the Uckfield Leisure Centre on Sunday 2nd September, for a company wide charity football match. It was Team East vs Team West in a winner takes all match.

27 players took part in the match from all over the company, with friends, families and colleagues all there to cheer the boys on!

Sam, Miranda and Lisa ran a homemade bake sale to provide snacks to the players and spectators to keep them all going throughout the day and to raise further funds for charity.

A huge thank you to Uckfield Leisure Centre who very kindly offered us use of their outdoor 3G pitch free of charge, so we could donate all funds raised straight to the charity.

The game was started by our very own referee for the day Graham Pitts with Team West kicking off. It was a laboured start as the teams got to know each other before Team West took the initiative and scored a couple of quickfire goals. Team East (looking pretty in purple) tried to get back into it and a wel- timed run from Gareth Young put him through 1-on-1 with Carl Muncey in the Team West goal, Gareth looked certain to score but a wonderful save from Carl, tipping the ball over the bar, kept the clean sheet intact. This spurred on Team West to push to put the game out of reach and had multiple chances well saved by Chris Maityard in the Team East goal, however the pressure kept building and proved too much, and Team West scored another couple of goals. Team East looked dead and buried at this point and surely there was no chance to get back into it, but then Richard Heritage sprung the offside trap and was through on goal, he shot low to the right hand side of the goal with the ball bound for the corner of the net but suddenly, the long right arm of Carl got down and pushed the ball away….. straight to Joe Skippen to tap the ball into an empty net. Game on? Team West again took this as inspiration and again got another couple of goals before Graham blew the whistle for half time.

Half Time score: Team West 6-1 Team East

We made a couple of team changes at half time to stir things up a bit, including taking Team West goalkeeper Carl Muncey and putting him at centre back for Team East!

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. A stirring 2nd half fight back from Team East, lead by a fantastic hat-trick by Stephen Bruty; the pick of which was getting the ball about 25 yards out, turning 2 defenders before placing the shot into the corner, brought them back into it. 6-1 quickly became 7-5, could they do it? What’s this? Clearly lost, Carl Muncey has picked the ball up in midfield and has made a darting run down the right wing and put a ball across towards Stephen Bruty, can he get to it? Yes! But oh no! The ball was just too high, and he couldn’t get his head onto it right and the ball flies over the bar. That’s it, Graham blows his whistle for the last time and the game finishes.

Final score: Team West 7-5 Team East.

A great day had by all and we raised over £420 for our partner charity Teenage Cancer Trust!

A huge thanks to all that played, helped and watched and again to Uckfield Leisure Centre for the free use of the pitch.
