Installing Timber Fencing: What You Need to Know 

Timber fencing is a popular choice for British gardens, offering a natural look that blends seamlessly with the landscape. Choosing the Right Timber 

Selecting the right type of wood is crucial for longevity and appearance. Common options include pressure-treated softwood, which resists rot and insect damage, and hardwoods like oak or chestnut, valued for their durability. Always opt for timber certified by the FSC or PEFC to ensure it’s sourced responsibly. 

Planning and Permissions 

Before installation, measure your boundary carefully and check for any underground utilities. In some cases, especially if your fence exceeds two metres in height or borders a public highway, you may need planning permission from your local council. It’s wise to consult neighbours, too, to avoid boundary disputes. 

Tools and Materials 

  • Timber fence panels or boards 

  • Posts (wooden or concrete) 

  • Gravel boards 

  • Postcrete or concrete mix 

  • Spirit level 

  • Tape measure 

  • Screws or nails 

  • Drill or hammer 

  • Protective treatment 

Installation Steps 

 

 

1.Mark Out the Line: Use string and stakes to mark the fence’s path, ensuring it’s straight and follows your property boundary. 

 

 

 

2. Set the Posts: Dig post holes at least 60cm deep, spacing them according to your panel’s width. Secure posts with concrete, checking they are level and upright. 

 

 

3. Attach Gravel Boards: Fit gravel boards to the base of your fence. These help prevent moisture damage to the panels

 

 

 

4. Install Panels or Boards: Once the posts are set, fix the panels or individual boards to the posts using screws or nails. Double-check alignment as you go. 

 

 

5. Treat the Timber: Apply a weatherproof treatment to protect your fence from the British climate. Regular maintenance will keep it looking its best for years.

Maintenance Tips 

Inspect your fence annually for signs of rot, loose panels, or damage. Reapply timber treatment every couple of years and clear vegetation away from the base to prevent dampness. With a bit of care, your timber fencing will stand strong and stylish for decades.
